The End Crowns the Work

The end crowns the work.  Indeed, if you put in the right amount of smart work, it does.  But sometimes you have to pause and ask yourself if this specific crowning is really worth all of your work.  Perhaps you decide that it is not.  Depending upon which part of this maxim is causing you problems, you could find different work to get to the same end, or you could start working towards a new end all together.  One way or another, if you work, you shall eventually be crowned.  Keep in mind, however, that it was never established whether the crown would be gold, plastic, or even imaginary.  The crown need not always be tangible, but you must work toward those that are meaningful.
